This is the first installment in the journey to complete a Legio Custodes army in Non Metallic Metal. This post is to show the completion of the first four miniatures in this massive commission: two Galatus Dreadnoughts and two Achillus Dreadnaughts.
Each of these Contemptor Dreadnoughts requiring extensive time and careful attention to detail. All of the gold armour plates and metallic equipment were painted in the Non-Metallic Metal (NMM) style, which has been a rewarding but time consuming undertaking. NMM requires precise shading, highlights, and reflections to achieve a realistic metallic look without the use of metallic paints.

This project’s colour scheme focuses on a striking combination of:
- The armour plates are gold and black, with red shoulder pads and shields for contrast. The gears and mechanisms are intricately detailed.
- The Galatus Dreadnoughts, with their iconic shields and massive swords, and the Achillus Dreadnoughts, armed with distinctive spears, provided opportunities to experiment with reflective gold and matte black surfaces.

These miniatures are some of the most time-consuming pieces I’ve ever worked on. The intricate designs of the Legio Custodes models, combined with the complexity of the NMM technique, necessitated numerous late nights and (a massive amount of) extensive refining to ensure the desired effect was achieved.

These Contemptor Dreadnoughts are only the beginning of what promises to be an impressive Legio Custodes army. In the coming weeks, I’ll provide updates on additional units as they are completed.
